Starting From Scratch?

1. DBS Check
You need an enhanced DBS check to start your ADI application. Around £12 — apply direct with DVSA.
2. Part 1 — Theory & Hazard Perception
Study with an online ADI theory course or book, then book your test (£81) with DVSA.
What's actually tested?
100 multiple-choice questions across 4 topic areas — road procedure; traffic signs, car control & pedestrians; the driving test, disabilities & the law; publications & instructional techniques — plus a 14-clip hazard perception test where you click as soon as you spot a developing hazard. You need to pass both parts.
3. Part 2 — Driving Ability
We'll match you with a trainer — Chikko or Bogdan can deliver this training directly, or we'll find you an approved ADI trainer nearby. Pay upfront for a training package, then sit the DVSA test (£111).

What's actually tested?
An eyesight check, 5 "show me, tell me" vehicle safety questions, general driving ability across varied road and traffic conditions, 2 reversing manoeuvres, and around 20 minutes of independent driving following either sat-nav directions or road signs. The test lasts about an hour and is marked to a higher standard than the standard learner test.
4. Part 3 — Instructional Ability
Trainer to be confirmed once you reach this stage. Every training hour is logged against your trainer and you get a private link to track your own progress. Pay upfront for a training package, then sit the DVSA Standards Check (£111).

What's actually tested?
A DVSA examiner watches you deliver a real, client-centred driving lesson (about an hour) to one of your own pupils. You're marked across 17 areas of competence grouped into three categories: lesson planning, risk management, and teaching & learning strategies.

Questions About Qualifying
How long does it take to qualify?+
Most people take 6–12 months from starting Part 1 to passing Part 3, depending on how much time you can put into studying and training. DVSA gives you 2 years to pass all three parts once you've passed Part 1 — if you don't, you start again from Part 1.
Can I earn money while I'm still training?+
Yes — once you've passed Part 2, you can apply for a Trainee (Pink) Licence, which lets you teach paying pupils under supervision while you train for and sit Part 3.
Do I need my own car?+
Not to train or take your tests. Once you're qualified and join DriveCraft, you'll need a dual-controlled car — we'll point you toward instructor car insurance and fitting when you're at that stage.
What if I don't pass a test first time?+
DVSA allows up to 3 attempts at each part within your 2-year window. Your trainer will tell you honestly when you're ready to book, to avoid wasting attempts.
Manual or automatic?+
Either — you can train and test in a manual or automatic car. Just bear in mind an automatic ADI badge only lets you teach automatic lessons.
